Hip Hop Dance Choreographers

A hip hop choreographer is the one that is charged with bringing the moves and sequences together to create hip hop dance routines and performances.

Their job also involves other things such as working with the dancers, teaching them the choreography and guiding them until they perform it right.

They will also often be in charge of selecting the dancers that they want to perform the routines or they may be brought in to work with an exisiting group of dancers.

Other duties that they are often also involved in include selecting the music, arranging the rehearsals (not always), dealing with staging and collaborating with other members working on the production such as lighting crew, producers and other technical staff.

They will usually have a team working with them when they are hired, however if it is a project of their own then they will have to bring a team together themselves.

Their days can involve any of the things described above. Usually they will come up with the hip hop choreography in their own time and if they are doing it professionally they will usually be paid for hours spent in rehearsal, at the show and even for the choreography itself in some instances.

Rehearsal days may be long as may shows especially nearer to show time. There can also be shorter rehearsals perhaps only lasting several hours.

There is also thinking time away from these tasks where they will think about how they can improve the choreography or make changes to it, or which dancers will perform each routine and other considerations.

For the very top choreographers this can be a very well paid job, choreographers can receive long term contracts to work on shows, with television companies and on film sets also.

Choreographers typically will get paid a significant amount more than the dancers they work with as they take on more responsibilities. It is also a career often entered in later life, as most choreographers are dancers in early adulthood.
