Hip Hop Choreographers (Continued...)

They can use all their experiences as a dancer when creating choreography and will have appeared in many different shows as a dancer when they were younger.

In fact these days it is not even uncommon for hip hop dance choreographers to still be working as dancers in the industry and combine the two careers together! They're getting younger these days!

Hip hop choreographers have showreels of their work which the dance agency or agent that represents them will send to prospective clients for bookings.

Many hip hop dance choreographers get approached through good word of mouth and their reputation. They are often asked to make a submission for a project.

Those on the hiring team will then look at the submissions of the different choreographers and make a decision based on whose choreography they think will be most suitable for the job in hand.

It's a sort of job application in a way as unlike a dance audition where the dancers will learn the routine and dance it on the same day to be judged, choreographers are usually given time to prepare a submission.

This gives them enough time to create the choreography and often teach a few dancers they have worked with, before performing it for a camera and handing in their submission.

It is a competitive industry and as you can imagine there are less jobs available for choreographers than there are for dancers. For one show there may be only 1 choreographer but 100 dancers!

However those with a good reputation and agency representing them can find work on a consistent basis that pays well and enjoy a rewarding career.

If this is somewhere you wish to go in the future, you need to prepare for it and practise your skills and choreograph will in advance before beginning the career. The first step of course is to become a brilliant hip hop dancer!
